A Little About Us

This is us! Well, four of us, anyway.

Pictured here are Kandy, Quan, Aveah, and Alexis, about two years after the accident that changed our family's lives. It's just one moment captured from a much bigger family story.

We're a multigenerational family with five daughters, grandchildren, and a two-year-old son who keeps everyone laughing and on their toes. Our family is full of different personalities, strong opinions, big dreams, and plenty of love.

I'm Kandy, the mama behind Mudflower Mama and founder of Medical Moms United and Caregivers United. I'm a wife, mother, nana, caregiver, and advocate who believes no family should have to face life's hardest challenges without support, information, and somewhere to belong.

My wife, Quan, is our family chef, football enthusiast, and the backbone of our household. She's straightforward, fiercely protective, incredibly funny,

and has a heart that's much softer than her stern exterior might suggest. Together, we've spent more than a decade building a life, growing together, and creating a home where our family will always have somewhere to return.

Our house is the gathering place for holidays and family dinners. There's usually more food than anyone can eat, plenty of laughter, and a game or two. We also have an open-table policy: if someone has nowhere to go for the holidays or doesn't feel welcome with their own family, they're welcome at ours. No questions asked. No judgment.

We're not a perfect family. We don't always agree, and life certainly hasn't gone the way we planned. But through the laughter, disagreements, celebrations, and difficult seasons, we've learned that family isn't about always getting along. It's about knowing you have people you can count on when it matters.

That's the family behind Mudflower Mama. Real people, living real life, with a whole lot of love.

That's the family behind Mudflower Mama. Real people, living real life, with a whole lot of love.

In October 2020, our family was preparing for a new chapter. Our daughters were building lives of their own, Alexis was raising Aveah and creating a future for them both, and Quan and I were finally beginning to enjoy a little freedom after years of raising children.

Then came the accident that changed everything.

Alexis suffered a severe traumatic brain injury that left her unable to speak and with significant physical limitations. While she fought for her life, the rest of us faced a future none of us could have imagined.

It wasn't just Alexis's life that changed. Every one of us lost something.

The independence we'd known, the plans we'd made, and the everyday moments we'd taken for granted suddenly looked very different.

There were hospital rooms, impossible decisions, unanswered questions, and days when we had no idea what tomorrow would bring.

And while Alexis lay in a coma, I made her a promise.

That promise still guides us today.

Life didn't stop after the accident. It just looked different, and we had to learn new ways of doing things.

There are still birthdays, holidays, family dinners, and those ridiculous little moments that leave us laughing until we cry. We celebrate milestones, big and small. We adapt, get creative, and keep making memories.

Some days are exhausting. Some are heartbreaking. But there are also beautiful days filled with laughter, love, and the everyday chaos of a big family.

Alexis is still Alexis. She still has her favorite things, her personality, and her place in every part of our family. And while life looks different now, there is still so much living left to do.

Our story is bigger than hospital rooms, diagnoses, and everything we've lost. It's also about the people who keep showing up, the memories we're still making, and the love that holds us together.

Long before our lives changed, the lotus flower held a special meaning to me. It grows through the mud and still finds a way to bloom. In many ways, that's been the story of my life, even before I became a medical mom.

For six years after Alexis's accident, I fought behind the scenes to get her the care she needed. From denied services and delayed medications to fighting for something as basic as her tube feeding supplies, it felt like every day brought another battle.

I never planned to share our lives publicly. But eventually, I reached a point where I couldn't keep fighting everything alone. I needed help. I needed answers. And I needed people to hear what was happening.

When I finally started speaking up, I discovered something heartbreaking. We weren't the only family going through this. Other mothers were fighting the same battles, facing the same denials, and struggling to find the same resources.

That's when I realized our story could be about more than what we were going through.

Mudflower Mama is where I share our journey. The struggles, the victories, the lessons, the laughter, and all the beautiful, messy moments in between. Because even though caregiving is a huge part of my life, it isn't all of who I am.

And from that journey, Medical Moms United was born, with a mission to bring mothers together, share resources, and help other families find the support I spent years searching for.

I can't change everything we've been through, but I can use what I've learned to help someone else.

Because even in the mud, we bloom. 🪷
